Gulmohar (indian name) Delonix regia, the flame tree, is a species of flowering plant in the bean family Fabaceae, subfamily Caesalpinioideae. It is noted for its fern-like leaves and flamboyant display of flowers. In many tropical parts of the world it is grown as an ornamental tree and in English it is given the name royal poinciana or flamboyant. It is also one of several trees known as "flame tree".
Propagation: most commonly propagated by seeds. Seeds are collected, soaked in warm water for at least 24 hours, and planted in warm, moist soil in a semi-shaded, sheltered position. airlayering can be done but it take a few months to develop roots.
Bonsai pot : Choose a wide, shallow bonsai pot about 6-8 inch wide to accommodate the wide-spreading root system of the plant. Be sure to select a container with several drainage holes .
Potting soil : take equal amounts of coarse sand, coco peat and organic compost or matured cow dung. Add just a small amount of moss as it will grow throughout the soil in time.
Cover each of the potting container's drainage holes with mesh and fill the bottom third of the container with soil. Center the plant in the container and fill the remaining two thirds of the container with your soil mixture.
Watering : Irrigate this bonsai deeply and infrequently to provide a slightly dry environment. water your bonsai when the soil begins to feel dry. Never allow this bonsai to dry out completely and avoid overwatering the plant to prevent root rot.
FEEDING N FLOWERING : Feed your Poinciana bonsai in the early spring, just as the growing season begins. Use a well-balanced, slow-release fertilizer . Feed the bonsai again in midsummer. Avoid heavy fertilization as it will reduce the number of blooms in order to produce heavier foliage. It takes a young delonix plant as long as five years to produce its first blooms
PRUNING : Prune the bonsai several times throughout the growing season. Prune back vigorous growing branches to maintain shape. Always use sharp, sterile pruning CUTTERS
